~ The Holy Cross, Middlezoy
~ |
| Middlezoy church dates from about the 14th century and
has a fine tower with turret and parapet and canopied niches. The
14th century chancel boasts a a black oak screen of the 15th century
with both tracery and network. A small brass in the nave tells of a
Frenchman who served in the English army for 18 years, he died
fighting gallantly in the Battle of Weston. This no doubt is a
reference to the Battle of Sedgemoor, Royalist soldiers were
bivouacked within these walls. |
| MIDDLEZOY - from
the Old English middel 'middle of the sea way river'. Note:
Zoy is a corruption of the river name Sowey |
| Sowi in the Domesday Book
(1086). |
