Bromsberrow lies in the north
west of the county beneath Conigree Hill, a Saxon 'Burh' (fortified
mound). The Church dates from around 1170 and still retains the
original Norman font. The Church consists of nave with trussed
rafter roof, the oak screen bears the date 1502. The chancel
contains aumbry, piscina and altar table. In the north aisle there
is a picture of St. Mary a copy of the - |
| - Assumption by Murillo. The
vestry contains the arms of local families and a painting of Civil
War Banners. The Yate chapel was built by Walter Yate in 1725 as a
burial chamber. The south porch dates from the 14th century only the
entrance arch and roof trusses are original. The tower stands on the
12th century foundations and has dwarf corner buttresses and three
lancets. There is a peel of 6 bells recast from the original 5 in
1773 by T. Rudhall. The Clock built by Joyce of Whitchurch has a
'Big Ben' escapement with a bob weighing 2 cwt. In the Churchyard
are some table tombes of the 18C and the earliest Headstone is dated
1690 the Yew tree by the porch is said to be 800 years old. |
