~ Minster Church of
St.Cuthburga, Wimborne Minster ~ |
|
|
The Minster is the mother
church of the large parish of Wimborne and is dedicated to St
Cuthberga who founded a Benedictine Nunnery on the site in A.D.705,
this was destroyed by Danes in 1013. The oldest part of the present
church is the Norman tower which dates from 1120. It originally had
a spire but this fell in during a service in 1600! The south
transept was added in 1220 and the North - |
| - transept around 1350 with the West Tower
and its peal of 5 bells (now 10) in 1464. There have of course been
various embellishments throughout the centuries but fortunately no
damage was suffered during the Civil War and the stained glass
windows and famous library with bibles dating from 1343 survived
intact. The Norman font, which is still in use was stripped of some
of its decoration and now has a Victorian oak cover. The Minster is
sited in the middle of the atmospheric market town of Wimborne. |
