The Church a mixture of styles
from Norman to late Perpendicular. The chancel and north and south
arcades of the nave date from the 13th century while the south aisle
and arcade is of Early English. The font is Norman restored in 1920,
the chancel has a fine arch and sixteenth century oak roof. In the
churchyard are the graves of Thomas Hardy's siblings, parents,
grandparents, uncle, aunt and cousin. |
| Hardy's heart is buried here with his two wives Emma
Lavinia and Florence Emily. It was said that the surgeons cat ate
the heart and had to be substituted by another. |
