The church overlooks the
village, its tower heavily buttressed, the lower part is Norman
while the rest dates from the fourteenth century. The chancel arch
is Norman with patterned pillars and capitals, the old font was
probably thirteenth century and the pulpit is panelled and
decorated. Nearby is a green called the Castle all that remains of
King Athelstan's palace, he hunted here in the winter with hawks and
hounds. On Eggardon Hill is and ancient camp built before the Roman
times, it is some 800 feet high with ramparts, close by runs a Roman
road which led to Dorchester. |
