Iwerne Courtney also known as
Shroton is sheltered by the Hambledon and Hod Hills. On both are
found Iron Age Hill-Forts. Southeast of the hill-fort on Hambleton
Hill is the site of an earlier Stone Age settlement approximately 20
acres in size. In 1645 on Hambledon hill some 2000 villagers, later
known as Clubmen due to their crude weapons, stood against Cromwell.
They were tired of the war and - |
| - destruction wreaked by both Royalist and
Roundhead. They were routed by 50 Roundhead Dragoons who locked them
in Iwerne Courtney Church. |
