Fontmell Magna another
fascinating Dorset village name - this one is pure Celtic in origin,
FONT meaning Spring and MOEL meaning Bare Hill = 'Spring by the Bare
Hill'. The church is constructed of Greensand Ashlar. Part of the
Tower dates from the second half of the 15th century and houses 6
bells while the Nave, South Porch and Aisle are probably medieval in
origin. |
| At the time of William the Conqueror and
the Domesday Book the village was quite large, having three water -
mills. By 1861 the village had a population of 875 with many trades
and skills available, these included Brewing and Malting at the
Flower's Brewery (Est:1780) which was adjacent to the Crown Inn. |
