Fontmell Magna another fascinating Dorset village name - this one is pure Celtic in origin, FONT meaning Spring and MOEL meaning Bare Hill = 'Spring by the Bare Hill'. The church is constructed of Greensand Ashlar. Part of the Tower dates from the second half of the 15th century and houses 6 bells while the Nave, South Porch and Aisle are probably medieval in origin.
At the time of William the Conqueror and the Domesday Book the village was quite large, having three water - mills. By 1861 the village had a population of 875 with many trades and skills available, these included Brewing and Malting at the Flower's Brewery (Est:1780) which was adjacent to the Crown Inn.
