~ All Saints, Fifehead
Neville ~ |
|
|
The Romans lived here and so
did the Saxons which is where the village name derives. A Hide was a
measure of land and in Wessex this was 48 acres, from this comes the
first name Fithyde = Fifehead a village of 240 acres. William de
Nevill came over from Neuville in Normandy. From this came the
second part of the name, Nevill = Neville. The small church sits
back from the narrow lane. |
| It sits in a small graveyard almost hidden by a large
yew which stretches over the lych gate. Although the church may have
links with the 15th century the nave and pulpit are of the 18th
century. To the rear of the church is a large table tomb, some 20
feet by15 feet and as high as a man. |
