~ St.Mary, Tedburn St.Mary
~ |
| The church stands in a small hamlet about a mile from
the village which has grown up either side of a coaching road built
in the 16th century. There has been a church here since at least
1264 when the first rector is recorded. The tower is 13th century
and contains a peel of six bells. In the porch over the entrance
door in red are these words "surely the lord is in this
place", inside the pulpit is of stone with wineglass stem,
it is four-sided, three painted panels depicting evangelists. The
church was re-floored in 1868, and on removing the old floor nine
skeletons were found, they were all about 6 foot in height and all
appeared to have been buried at the same time, there was no clue to
their identity. |
