~ St.Mary, Ottery St.Mary ~ |
|
|
This church is like a small
cathedral, it looks down on the town from its setting on the hill.
The church dated from the 13th century, the two towers, one with a
leaded spire with weather cock, each has battlements, buttresses and
pinnacles and the usual gargoyles. The north porch has a fan vaulted
roof and there is a great door. Inside the aisle has fan-vaulted
roofs with hanging bosses and corbels. - |
| - In the chancel has the original timbers
painted in red, gold and green. The large wooden clock built nearly
400 years ago is one of the four oldest in England. Samuel Taylor
Coleridge was born here, his father was both vicar and school
master. |
