~ St.Michael, Otterton ~ |
|
|
Otterton church stands high
above the river Otter with a view over the village. The tower is
15th century while the remainder of the church has been refurbished.
There are a number of items of interest such as a sword and sheath
found in the belfry in 1768 and a large key which must have locked a
mediaeval door. Nearby are what remains of a priory which dates from
the - |
| - time of Magna Carta although its history goes back to
William the Conqueror who gave the manor of Otterton to the
monastery of Mont St. Michel in Normandy. King John founded the
priory here as a cell of this order. |
