Here in East Budleigh at Hayes
Barton farmhouse is where Sir Walter Raleigh was born. Raleigh's
father was churchwarden in the church a mile from the farm. In the
church the 60 bench ends depict many scenes including ships in a
storm, a Red Indian, a figure like a Pharaoh, Dragons, Monsters and
faces. On one pew are the arms of the Raleigh family. The church has
a tower - |
| - which is castellated and a nave with four bays, there
is a barrel roof. The pulpit has seventy figures carved in it and is
the work of Henry Hems of Exeter. In the centre of the nave is an
ancient memorial a stone with engraved cross in memory of Raleigh's
fathers first wife Joan Drake. |
