~ Holy Cross, Crediton ~ |

|
Crediton lies between two
rivers and is surrounded by hilly countryside. A great fire in 1743
destroyed hundreds of houses in the west part of town, 26 years
later many of the re-built houses were again gutted by fire. The
church has a central tower and four turrets and was built on Norman
foundations. The lady chapel is 13th century and the nave with its
aisle windows dates from the - |
| - 15th century, the font is Norman with oak canopy. The
Saxons built a Cathedral here which had nine Saxon bishops. It was
here in Crediton in the dark ages of the 7th century that
St.Boniface was born 'Winfrid of Crediton' and nearby is Winfred's
Well. |
