~ St.Andrew, Coryton ~ |
|
|
The name Coryton is taken from
a Celtic saint, St Curig. The first Church was built in the early
sixth century when St Curig was in Devon and before he went to
Britany. Coryton was at that time known as Curigtown. In 1261 the
church was rebuilt and dedicated to St Andrew, the nave was rebuilt
in the 15th century, by the 16th century the tower had been added.
In th 1840's the south porch and north transept were built. In the
tower hang five bells dated 1684, 1709, 1908 (two) and the fifth a
pre-Reformation bell thought to have come from Lewtrenchard Church.
|
| On the north wall of the tower can be seen
three old bell clappers the inscription beneath reads 'Our duty done
in belfry high now voiceless tongues at rest we lie'. |
