~ St.George, Clyst
St.George ~ |

The manor of Clyst St. George
was held by Ralph de Pomerai, a follower of William the Conqueror.
In 1245 it passed to William Champernoun and was known as Clyst
Champernoun. After 1330 Sir William Champernoun died and his
daughter Elizabeth inherited the manor, she married William Polglass
and the name reverted to Clyst St. George. |
| Little is known of the original Saxon
church, the chancel of the present church was built in 1300 and the
nave and tower in 1420. The church was partly destroyed on August
31,1940 by enemy action, an incendiary bomb fell directly into the
organ. |
