The cliffs rise to 250 feet
from the pebble beach with views of Dorset and Portland to one side
and Devon and Torquay to the other. Sir Walter Raleigh was born at
East Budleigh only two miles away and the sailor Humphrey Gilbert
was born here. High on Cliff Terrace a house bears a tablet which
tell that this was where Thomas Adophus Trollope brother of Anthony
lived. |
| Here also is the grave of James Lackington and a Chapel
built by him. Born in 1746 in Wellington, he rose from an alliterate
cobbler to a wealthy man one of the first popular booksellers. This
was a new parish created in 1900. |
