~ Buckfast Abbey, Buckfast
~ |
| The Domesday Book records St.Mary's Abbey at Buckfast
with lands, cattle, oxen, goats pigs and sheep. The chronicler
William Rufus records "God's church was brought very low".
The Abbey was rebuilt in by French Benedictine monks and stands on
the site of the original medieval monastery in 1538, Henry VIII
dissolved the monasteries and Buckfast fell into ruin again. The
present Abbey was built between 1908 and 1933 and the first Abbot of
Buckfast was Biniface Natter who is buried here with a crucifix
marking his grave. |
