~ St.Bridget, Bridestowe ~ |
|
|
The village name 'Bridestowe'
means the place of St. Bridget. It is probable that the name and
dedication of the church came from the Irish Saint Brigida, Bridget
or Bride. Born in the late 5th century she later became the Abbess
of Kildare and sent mission priests to preach the gospel and build
churches. She died in A.D.525. The present church is the third on
this site and was completed in 1450. |
| It consists of a tower, entrance, nave and chancel. One
of the best features is the chancel arch of Polyphant stone. The
painting behind the altar depicts St Francis of Assisi riding a
Dartmoor Pony. |
