St.Michael de Rupe, Brent Tor ~ |
|
|
The church stands on Brent Tor
which is 1130 feet high, it was dedicated to St.Michael in the 4th
December 1319 by Bishop Stapeldon and the name appearing on the
parish deed is Brente Torre The church must have existed
before this date as it was mentioned in a deed of Bishop Bronescombe
in 1269. Locally it is said that a merchant saved from a shipwreck
built the church on the highest point - |
| - he saw when he sailed into Plymouth Sound
on his return home. In fact the church was built 700 years ago by
the monks of Tavistock and is only 15 feet wide and 37 feet long,
the tower is 40 feet high and houses three bells. In the village of
Brentor is the Parish Church which is much easier to reach for the
congregation than the church on Brent Tor. |
|
| Brent Tor from the Celtic Bryn
meaning hill and twr (pronounced toor) meaning heap
or pile. |
