~ St.Nonna, Bradstone ~ |
|
|
Bradstone Church, dedicated to
St Nonna was first consecrated in 1261. St Nonna brought
Christianity to this part of Devon in the 5th century, she came from
Pembrokeshire. St Nonna died in Cornwall in the village of Alternun.
The Church is small and stands in a walled graveyard. The tower is
pinnacled, through the plain Norman doorway into the porch notice
its barrel roof with bosses of flowers. The chancel dates from the
13th century, there is a fine font. On the wall is a strange carved
stone head (below left) also just to one side of the entrance is
this trangular recess in the wall (below right) possibly for Holy
water. |
| Outside by the tower a stone inscribed John
Coumbe was six score years when he died in 1602. Opposite lies the
impressive entrance to the Tudor Hall through the old Tudor
gatehouse, above the arch is a room with its six pinnacled gables.
The Hall was the home of the Cloberrys for 13 generations. |
