~ St.Michael, Axmouth ~ |
|
|
Axmouth sits at the foot of
Hawkesdown Hill and about a mile from the mouth of the river Axe.
Here on the hill are the two banks and a ditch of the Bronze and
Iron Age defenders camp. The church tower is of the 15th century and
the chancel dates from the 14th century, The earlier parts of the
church date from the Normans, their work can be seen in the richly
carved doorway and pillars - |
| - supporting the arches. Other items of
interest include a mediaeval scratch dial and faint paintings of Our
Lord and the Madonna. Nearby is Bindon House popular in Tudor times
and later the home of Sir Walter Erle and officer in the
Parliamentary Army. |
