~ St.Peter ad Vincula,
Ashwater ~ |
|
|
Built about 1250 the present
church replaces a small Norman church built during the eleventh
century and it also replaced an earlier church built by the Saxons
which probably had cob walls and a thatched roof. Ashwater Church
has a grim dedication meaning "St.Peter in chains" this
title is only shared by a few other churches most notably the Prison
Chapel in the Tower of London. |
| The tower, chancel and aisle all date from 1250, pillars
run between the north and south aisles several of which are
octagonal freestone. The tomb in the south aisle is thought to be
that of Thomas Carminow who died in 1442 on the Wednesday before
Christmas, the effigies are of him and his wife. |
