Truro was granted a charter
about 850 years ago, Elizabeth I granted a charter under which the
town was governed by a mayor, aldermen and burgesses. Truro was made
a coinage town by King John, tin was taken there to be stamped.
During the Civil War it became the centre of activity for the kings
men. Truro became a city in 1877 and in 1880 work began on its
Cathedral with the laying of the foundation stone, it took thirty
years to complete. The Cathedral is built of granite and stone in
the Early English style and stands on the site of an earlier church.
