~ St.Mary Magdalene,
Launceston ~ |
| Launceston, otherwise 'Dunheved' was the
ancient capital of Cornwall. Dunheved was incorporated as a free borough by
Richard (Plantagenet), Earl of Cornwall and Poiton, in the 13th century and the
borough appears to have had a mayor since 1257. The parish church of St Mary
Magdalene was built between 1524-1540 by Sir Henry Trecarrell kt and is built
of granite in the perpendicular style. It consists of a chancel, nave of eight
bays, aisles, south porch with parvise over. |
| The embattled western tower is 84 feet
high and of the late 14th century. It contains a clock and 8 bells. The tower
was detached at one time but is now connected with the church by a room erected
by the 5th Duke of Northumberland. |
