~ St.Finbarrus, Fowey ~ |
| The parish church of Fowey is dedicated to St Finn Barr
(AD613-630) who during his stay at Fowey built a little church
between the hills on the site of an earlier church built by St
Goran. About AD 1150 a Norman Church was built here but all that
survives of this church is the font which is carved in hard elvan
from a quarry at Padstow. It is thought this church was destroyed by
pirates and was rebuilt in - |
| - 1328 but again suffered damage during a French raid in
1456. Restoration began in 1460 and the tower, the superb wagon
roof, rood screen and loft date from this period. There was a
further restoration in 1894. |
