This quiet parish church
harbours several unexpected treasures, but before going inside the
solid 13th century tower which is constructed more like a keep has
to be admired, unusually it is not at the end of the church but
attached to the side. It has a slight lean to it and it is said that
this was caused by the weight of the contraband that was stored
there! |
| Inside the main attraction is the Colshull Chapel which
is part of the north aisle and is ornate and full of interesting
things including a large slate carving of Ann Smyth depicted in full
Elizabethan dress and several other slate monuments. |
| Pride of place goes to the 1483 tomb of Sir
John Colshull shown as a recumbent knight in armour. It is stated
that he was the second richest man in Cornwall and the exterior of
the Colshull chapel which is very grand and castellated contrasts
sharply with the rest of the church exterior. The living was for a
long time the gift of Balliol College Oxford and at one time Scott
of 'Liddell' and 'Scott's Greek Lexicon' was vicar here. On the
other side of the road from the church, just a short distance away
is a Bronze Age stone circle. |
