The Cathedral was founded as an Abbey in
1140 by Robert Fitzharding, a family who were merchants of some
standing in 12th century Bristol. Robert was reeve of Bristol,
later to be made the Lord of Berkeley by Henry II. This title was
given in thanks for Fitzhardings support in the civil war against
King Stephen. He was buried at the foot of the pulpit steps.
Augustinian monks from Hereford were brought to Bristol to found
the Abbey, they were known as Black Canons. |
